“…in writing a poem I most often find myself processing a thought/feeling on the fly and the poem is a record of that, as much as the idea(s) I set out, however coherently, or not -to net and land and that by the poem’s end I’ve arrived at a coda. This happens without any plan and when it does I treat it is a happy accident.
This process hasn’t always been obvious to me and once I recognised it I began to have ideas of presenting these short verses or concluding lines at the end of longer poems, as things in themselves, some of them quoted unchanged from their original place and some developed and some which might be endings in search of a body and a head. And there are one or two that were always just short and feel comfortable here, where by comparison they are long.
Also included here are a sub-collection of mostly couplets, where I’ve been teasing pairs of lines against each other, looking for constructive dissonance and not being shy of a some surrealism, what I’ve often looked for is a third sense, implied or conjured, in the gap between two lines -that may not follow one from the other, or might seem to, but veer at some angle.
Both these formats I hope to continue to record in occasional pamphlets like this one.
Along side these fragments, couplets and orphaned codas, are photographs I’ve taken, that I feel have a similar sensibility. If pressed to characterise them I would again mention surrealism, but this time more in the sense of the strangeness of things-as-they-are, without recourse to alien juxtaposition, things and views holding a sense of something more than the sum of their parts, whose value to me is precisely that I can’t put my finger on it…”
